Greg Scheer
Lee University will welcome Greg Scheer, composer, author, speaker, and a music associate at the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship, to the Spring 2017 Church Music series on Monday, Feb. 20, at 7:30 p.m. in the Lee Chapel.
Mr. Scheer’s lecture, “A Balanced Diet of Congregational Songs,” will consider the broad range of congregational songs available today and suggest ways for worship leaders to present churches with a repertoire that sustains and encourages healthy faith. The lecture will also include material from his latest book, “Essential Worship.”
“Greg Scheer is a scholar in the field of music and worship, and Lee is excited to be able to bring him to Cleveland,” said Dr. Randy Sheeks, Lee music professor and event organizer. “I heard him present at the National Worship Leader Conference a few years back and have always wanted to bring him to Lee. This will be a great event for Lee students and anyone in the community involved in leading music for worship.”
Mr. Scheer will also lecture in several classes that day in the Curtsinger School of Music Building, and those sessions will be open to guests as space permits. He will speak to students in Orchestration and Arranging at 10 a.m. in Room 223 and students in Philosophy of Music and Worship at 3 p.m. in Room 200.
Mr. Scheer has written two books, “The Art of Worship” and “Essential Worship,” and composed hundreds of pieces, songs and arrangements. His music is published by Augsburg Fortress, GIA, Abingdon Press, Worship Today, Faith Alive and in numerous hymnals.
He has won commissions from the Iowa Choral Directors Association, Iowa Composers Forum, Linn-Mar High School String Orchestra, Chagall String Quartet, and Northwestern College. His hymn, “People of the Lord,” won the Calvin 09 hymn contest and was subsequently sung and published internationally. Mr. Scheer’s work has been translated into 11 languages.
He resides with his wife Amy, and their sons Simon and Theo, in Grand Rapids, Mi., where Mr. Scheer is the minister of worship at Church of the Servant.
