Covenant Rips Double Header Wins Over Berea

  • Friday, February 17, 2017
Caleb Bloye hit two home runs, including a walk-off solo shot in the second game, and the Covenant baseball team completed a doubleheader sweep of Berea with a 13-1 win in game one before rallying for a 3-2 victory in game two on Friday.

Covenant (5-3) has won five straight games and will seek its second straight three-game sweep in the series finale on Saturday at 11:30 a.m.

Bloye homered in game one and then blasted a walk-off homer in game two. The walk-off homer in game two was the third time Covenant has hit a walk-off home run in the program's modern history.

GAME ONE: Covenant 13, Berea 1

Covenant took advantage of nine walks and scored 13 runs on 14 hits in a 13-1 victory in game one of Friday's doubleheader.

Covenant scored six runs in the first inning on five hits.
Julien Amorelli, Taylor Bloye and Devin Cerrato all earned bases loaded walks in the frame, while Donny Lewis had an RBI single. Luke Harvey capped the inning with a two-run single to center field to make it 6-0.

That was plenty of offense for starting pitcher Matt Reitz. The right-hander allowed one run on four hits in his complete-game effort to go along with six strikeouts. Reitz (2-1) did not surrender a hit through the first 3.1 innings of work.

The Scots added two runs in the fourth on Caleb Bloye's two-run home run to left field, his first of the season. Covenant then scored four runs in the fifth as Cerrato doubled home Lewis before Trenton Nobles and Bloye had run-scoring hits. Joel Johnson drove in a run with an RBI ground out. Another Harvey hit in the sixth tacked on one more run for the Scots in the rout.

Harvey finished 4-for-5 with three RBIs and a run scored. Nobles went 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs, while Bloye was 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs in the win. Cerrato added two RBIs and a hit with two walks.

Matthew Wilburn (0-1) got the loss for Berea as he lasted 1.2 innings and allowed six runs on five hits. Nicholas Bottom went 2-for-3 with a run scored for the visiting Mountaineers.

GAME TWO: Covenant 3, Berea 2 (8 innings)

Covenant rallied with two runs in the seventh and then won it with Caleb Bloye's walk-off home run in the eighth to cap the sweep with a 3-2 victory. The game, part of the doubleheader, was set for seven regulation innings.

The Scots were stymied on offense for much of the game by Berea starter Joshua Works. Covenant trailed 2-0 entering the seventh before mounting a comeback.

Amorelli led off the seventh with a triple and scored on Taylor Bloye's RBI ground out to make the deficit 2-1. Lewis then reached on a fielding error and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Cerrato came through with a clutch RBI single through the left side to tie the game at 2-2. Berea reliever Tyler Pope worked out of the jam to send the game into extra innings.

Covenant starter Drew Bradley continued into the eighth and got a perfect inning, including two strikeouts, to keep the game tied at 2-2. Caleb Bloye then wasted little time as he drove the first pitch of the bottom of the eighth over the left field fence for a walk-off solo home run.

The home run was Bloye's second of the year and the day. It marked the third time Covenant has hit a walk-off home run and the first since Andrew Beck in 2015 against Methodist.

Bradley (2-1) went the distance and was phenomenal in picking up his second win of the year. The left-hander struck out a career-high 10, while allowing one earned run on four hits on 100 pitches.

Works went 6.1 innings and scattered four hits and one earned run with two strikeouts. Pope (0-1) gets the loss in relief. Caleb Gupton went 1-for-3 with a solo home run for Berea, while Devin Belleville was 2-for-3.
