UTC Tennis Team Wins Over North Alabama, Covenant

  • Saturday, February 18, 2017

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men’s tennis team posted wins over North Alabama and Covenant at the Racquet Club in Hixson today.  The Mocs took 13 of 14 points in the two wins.

UTC opened with a 6-1 victory against North Alabama, avenging last year’s 4-2 loss to the Lions.  Chattanooga won the nightcap 7-0 over the Scots to improve to 3-6 on the year.

Senior Nic Wilson and freshman Niklas Gerdes won two doubles matches today.

They are on a three-match streak and improve to 3-1 at No. 1 in the spring.

Senior Lucas Plesky led the Mocs with a pair of straight-sets wins at No. 1.  Gerdes won both his matches at No. 2, along with freshman Max Grobbelaar and senior Derrick Brown.  Junior Austin Boaz was in the lineup at No. 6 against Covenant and scored his first win of the season.

“We played well throughout the doubles and singles to get the victory over a very good North Alabama squad,” stated head coach Carlos Garcia.  “We came off a great week of practice and the team responded to get a much needed win.  We followed that up with another solid performance in the evening match from start to finish vs Covenant College.”

Tonight was the first ever Mocs Ball Kids event where each singles match had its own ball kid working the particular court.

“The kids did a wonderful job and many thanks to them as well as to Chad Winters (Director of Tennis at Coachworks at the Club) for helping with this new program here at Chattanooga Tennis,” said Garcia.

Next up for the men is a home match against Troy on Feb. 24 at the Racquet Club.  First serve is 2:00 p.m. (E.S.T.) and live scoring is available on the men’s tennis schedule page on GoMocs.com.
