The Chattanooga Zoo Takes Steps Toward green|light Certification

Zoo Increases Green Practices With Focus On Sustainable Initiatives

  • Thursday, February 2, 2017

green|spaces announces The Chattanooga Zoo is solidifying its commitment to sustainability through the green|light program. green|light is a third party corporate sustainability certification program through green|spaces that helps businesses with employee attraction, public image, cost savings, and environmental stewardship.

"The Chattanooga Zoo is thrilled to begin the green|light certification process to assist with implementing more sustainable initiatives throughout our institution,” says Emma DuBose, keeper I and Green Committee coordinator. “We are already committed to several different 'green' practices, such as lighting retrofits, recycling, and our newly installed water stations that allow guests to easily fill reusable water bottles to limit plastic waste. Furthermore, it is our goal to continue on this path of leadership and have more of an impact on conservation right here in our community."

Sustainability is important for the long-term ecological balance of our planet. The balance of meeting present day needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs is fundamental to protecting the future of wildlife species around the world, said officials.

“We are excited to have the Chattanooga Zoo bring attention to the importance of sustainability through their actions to pursue green|light certification,” says Natalie Hostetler, green|light program director. “It’s great to see the interest we’ve had within our community to implement sustainable practices. I’m happy we can help.”

Chattanooga Area Greenlight Certified businesses include: The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, The Flying Squirrel, The Crash Pad, 212 Market Restaurant, Ruby Falls, The Strand Salon, River City Company, AEED Inc., and the Sportsbarn.
