D.L “Tom” Sylvester
D.L “Tom” Sylvester, 90, of Chattanooga, passed away at his residence on February 21, 2017
He was a veteran of the United States Navy and served in World War II. He was serving aboard the USS Franklin when it was hit by enemy fire. The ship received more damage than any other ship in that battle and never sank. He received the Asiatic Pacific Victory Medal and also served on five other naval vessels during his military service. He retired from Lucey Boiler Company and was a member of the Boilermakers Local Union #679 for 65 years. He was also a member of South Chattanooga Church of God.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Anne Sylvester; parents, James and Ethel Sylvester, brothers, Fred, Harry, J.R., Ken and Bill Sylvester, sisters, Mildred Powell, Jean Johnson and Sue Brown.
Survivors include his sons, John, Fred (Carolyn) Sylvester, sisters, Gail (Jeff) Allen and Ruth Gross; brother, Ronnie (Pat) and sister in law, Dot Sylvester, several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 24, in the South Crest Chapel. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until the service hour. Interment with military honors will follow at Tennessee-Georgia Memorial Park.
Arrangements are by the South Crest Chapel of Lane Funeral Home and Crematory, at the end of historic Missionary Ridge, Rossville.
