Lady Scots Softball Falls To No. 5 Berry

  • Wednesday, February 22, 2017
The Covenant softball team gave No. 5-ranked and unbeaten Berry all it could handle in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader, but the Lady Scots ultimately dropped both games of the twin-bill. Berry took game one 5-4 before winning 8-0 in the finale at Warner Park in Chattanooga.

Covenant drops to 4-4 on the year. Berry, which moved up to No. 5 in the latest NFCA Top 25, remains unbeaten with a 10-0 record.

GAME ONE: Berry 5, Covenant 4

Lots of offense early turned into a tight contest late, but Berry withstood a sixth inning rally from the Lady Scots to take game one 5-4.

Both teams scored two runs in the first inning.
Berry's Sarah Moore had an RBI double and later scored in the Vikings' two-run top half of the frame. Covenant answered in the bottom of the inning as Madalyn Ames and Erika Mast singled to start the frame. Two batters later, Jordan Brett hit a double off the top of the fence in left-center field driving in both Ames and Mast to tie the score at 2-2.

Berry would score three runs in the second to take a 5-2 lead. Moore was at it again as she singled home a pair of runs followed by a Kenzie Fleming RBI single later in the inning.

Covenant starter Carsyn Stone settled down after that. The sophomore would allow just four hits over the final five innings to keep Covenant in the game. Stone (1-2) surrendered four earned runs on 10 hits, but also struck out five in her complete-game effort.

The Lady Scots sliced away at the 5-2 deficit in the sixth inning. Brett and Casey Grover led off the inning with consecutive singles. After a Berry pitching change, reliever Kassie Howard uncorked a pair of wild pitches that allowed pinch-runners Tyler Epes and Madyson Gibbins to score to make it 5-4. Covenant had runners at second and third with two outs later in the frame, but Howard worked out of the mess to preserve Berry's one-run lead.

Brett went 2-for-4 with two RBIs for Covenant, while Grover also collected two hits in three at-bats.

Berry starter Whitney Gribble (2-0) got the win as she went five innings and allowed four runs on eight hits. Howard notched the save after tossing two innings with four strikeouts. Moore, who was named NFCA Player of the Week earlier in the day, was 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs for the Vikings.

GAME TWO: Berry 8, Covenant 0

Berry hit three home runs and used big innings in the first and second to pull away for the 8-0 win over Covenant in five innings.

Elisabeth Federici, Kylie Aiken and Moore all hit homers for the Vikings. Berry scored four runs in the first, with Moore driving in a pair on a double to left field, and then three more in the second when Aiken homered.

Erika Mast, Shannon Schmitt, Brett and Kat Andrews all had a hit for Covenant in the loss. Tyler Epes (1-1) gets the loss as she went 1.2 innings. Sarah Huskey came on in relief in the second and tossed 3.1 innings allowing one run on two hits.

Makenzie Flynt (1-0) recorded the win for Berry after going four innings in relief of starter Howard. Offensively, Berry was led by Moore and her two hits with three RBIs. Marie Collop drove in two runs and went 1-for-3.
