Emily Rice Dixon Simmons, 87, of Chattanooga, died on Wednesday, February 22, 2017.
A native of Carlisle, Ky., she was born on Aug. 14, 1929, to the late Floyd H. and Alma W. Dixon. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Charles Dixon.
 
She had been a resident of the Chattanooga area for the past 60 years and was a member of the Hickory Valley Christian Church where she served as Sunday school teacher, organist and pianist for many years.  She was also retired secretary from the Hamilton County School system with 30 years of service and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Carlisle, Ky. She loved crocheting, knitting and spending time with her grandchildren.
 
Survivors include her loving husband of 63 years, Jack E. Simmons Sr.; five sons, Jack (Cindy) Simmons Jr., Gary Simmons, Larry (Kathy) Simmons, Steve (Sheri) Simmons and David (Dena) Simmons; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sister, Dortha Bristow, Bristol, TN.
 
Memorial contributions may be made to the Hickory Valley Christian Church, 6605 Shallowford Road, Chattanooga, Tn. 37421.
 
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 26, at Monte Vista Memorial Gardens in Johnson City, Tn. 
 
The family will receive friends from 12-6 p.m. on Saturday at the Hickory Valley Christian Church.
 
Arrangements are by the Valley View Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral home, 7414 Old Lee Highway, Chattanooga, Tn. 37421.
