Psi State Members from Murfreesboro Delta Chapter and Chattanooga Gamma and Kappa Chapters attended the 50th Year Anniversary Celebration, Founder’s Day meeting, held at the home of Bettye Brown, on Saturday. National Kappa Kappa Iota President Melinda Sams attended the celebration and shared memories of Psi State TN with members.
Linda Williams, second vice president of Psi State TN and history chair, shared information about the history of the organization. The Order of the Blue Blue Violet was organized Dec. 6, 1921. The name was changed to Kappa Kappa Iota on Feb. 6, 1931. Mary Ruth Holleman organized Psi State on Dec. 4, 1966 and meetings were held in Chattanooga at the Read House. Psi State TN received its charter on Feb. 11, 1967. Lucille Shugart was the first president and founder. Psi State TN has a scholarship in her honor to high school seniors planning to enter the field of education.
Judy McCready, president Psi State TN, conducted the Founder’s Day 50th Year Anniversary meeting celebration. Ms. McCready stated that she is proud to be a member of National Kappa Kappa Iota and the scholarship opportunities available for educators as well as for those who are entering the field of education. She said she is very proud of the philanthropic projects supported at local, state, and national levels of the organization. The purpose of this organization shall be to promote the advancement of education by providing an effective network for the exchange of education and teaching practices by educators.
National Kappa Kappa Iota Headquarters is located in Tulsa, Ok. and has members in 21 states.
