FRANKLIN, Tenn. – The Chattanooga area still has two teams in the running for championship hardware in the AAA division of State Duals Wrestling Tournament being held here at the Williamson County Agricultural Exposition Center, but there won’t be any from the A-AA classification.

The Hixson Wildcats got whipped by Greeneville by a 43-24 final in its first match of the day while Notre Dame had to come from behind to slip past Stratford in a 41-36 victory.

The Fighting Irish weren’t so fortunate in the semifinals as the defending state runner-up Pigeon Forge advanced with a 40-30 victory.

The Tigers will face that same Greeneville team in the finals after the Greene Devils got past Alcoa 41-36 in the other semifinal.

Hixson returns to action first thing Saturday morning with a match against Greenbrier while Notre Dame awaits that winner at 11.

Notre Dame had a tough time getting past Stratford but a nice 11-2 major decision from Ned Warwick gave the Fighting Irish a 38-36 lead before Alex Spraker’s exciting 17-11 decision at 145 clinched the win.

Daniel Hodges, Cade Holloway, Thomas Loher and Grant Speer all had pins for Notre Dame in that first match while Daniel Hodges and Holloway both had pins against Pigeon Forge.

David Hodges and Spraker both claimed forfeit wins at the end after the Tigers had clinched the win long before the final match.

Notre Dame coach Rocco Mansueto was very matter of fact with his team following the loss to Pigeon Forge.

“We just won four matches, but we could have won five or six.  I think our youth showed up as we just got out-experienced.  Pigeon Forge has a really good team.

“It charged us up a little to get the comeback win against Stratford, but that didn’t seem to have any affect on that second match.  We left the 195-pound match on the table when Doogan Boyd lost in overtime, but we just got out-wrestled in other spots.  We just got beat by a more seasoned team.

“We need to do more wrestling year round to bridge that gap, but more than half of my team has been wrestling two years or less.  We better be ready to scrap tomorrow morning,” he nodded.

The Hixson-Greeneville match was never close as the Greene Devils won the first five matches for a commanding 25-0 lead and it never got any closer.

Truman Ross scored Hixson’s first points with a pin at 220 and Charles Burton later added another pin at 113, but Greeneville’s lead was 43-12 before they forfeited the last two matches to the Wildcats.

“We just didn’t win the matches we were supposed to win,” said an obviously disgusted Hixson coach Garrick Hall as he prepared for his post-match talk with his team.

“Greeneville has a solid lineup from top to bottom and we knew it coming in, but we lost several matches where we just totally lost our focus.  Now we’ll see how we’ll bounce back tomorrow, but there’s not much else to say,” Hall concluded.
