The Tennessee Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) awarded Erlanger Health System with the Pro Patria Award on March 17 in Murfreesboro, Tenn. Erlanger is also Tennessee’s nominee for the 2017 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award for Large Business, the highest award given out by the Department of Defense’s ESGR.

During the presentation, ESGR officials stated, “Erlanger Health System has repeatedly shown its willingness to go the extra mile in supporting their employees who still serve in uniform. These supportive actions are accomplished with the best interests of the soldier in mind and knowing that their total focus must be on their military duties. Erlanger also recognizes the advantages of what the Guardsmen and Reservists bring to the workplace and takes great strides to attract them into their ranks.”

The highest level award the state ESGR can bestow is the Pro Patria Award. Each award recipient has demonstrated its support of the Guard and Reserve employees throughout the company including leadership, practices and policies which make provisions for participation in the National Guard and Reserve.

The highest level of recognition for an employer who supports their Guard and Reserve employees is given by the Secretary of Defense, the Freedom Award. Erlanger has been selected as one of thirty finalists for this honor. All nominations come from Guard and Reserve members, or their families, who are currently employed by the company.

“Erlanger’s hiring policies very much support associates who serve our country in the Guard and Reserves,” said Freedom Award nominator, U.S. Army Reservist MSG Terry Ellis, Respiratory Care Clinical Manager & ECMO Coordinator for Erlanger. “The financial support they provide to us when we are unable to work our regularly scheduled hours at the hospital is a huge benefit that many employers do not provide. The flexibility that management shows helps our service members work their schedules around the military and still allow for time to spend with our families. The relationships that are being built will allow for more opportunities for veterans at Erlanger in the future,” he added.

The award was presented by Carl Lambert, Chair of the Tennessee ESGR; Major General Philip M. Churn, Assistant to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff for Reserve Matters; and Major General Terry M. “Max” Haston, The Adjutant General for the Tennessee National Guard and received by Erlanger Health System Vice President for Human Resources, Floyd Chasse and Terry Ellis.

Last year, Erlanger Health System was recognized with the Above and Beyond Award and two Erlanger supervisors received the Patriot Award from the ESGR.
