The Chattanooga Mocs men’s golf team jumped eight spots into a tie for third through 36 holes at the Furman Intercollegiate. How did they make they make such a meteoric rise?
The squad put together a 10-under 278. That’s the second-best 18-hole score total-wise, behind the 5-under 275 earlier this month at the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate. It’s the best score vs. par since 13-under in the 2013 AutoTrader.com Collegiate.
Wes Gosselin and Brooks Thomas played key roles shooting 67 and 68, respectively.
But they weren’t alone. All five starters shot par or better with Phillip Hickam’s 71 joined by Etienne Brault and Stuart Thomas at 72.
The individuals got in the act as well. Andrew Weathers shot 70 with Will Porter adding 72. Lake Johnson turned in 75.
Gosselin is tied for fourth at 138 (-6). It’s a new personal best through 36 holes. B. Thomas and Weathers are also in the top 25, tied for 24th at 1 under.
No. 17 Clemson is the leader at 20 under. The Tigers were the only squad to best the Mocs day shooting 276. USC-Aiken is second at 9 under followed by Chattanooga and first round leader Georgia Southern at 7 under. Wofford’s Andrew Novak is the individual leader at 11 under.
Quotable
“I’m really proud of them. We’ve worked hard on making better decisions and that really showed today. Brooks and Phil stepped up after tough days yesterday. I’m excited the way this team is coming together. Our depth really showed today. Eight guys on the course and we didn’t have a score higher than bogey.” – Coach Mark Guhne.
Scoring
The counting cards played par or better on 87.5 percent (63/72) of their holes as all five starters turned in par or better 18s.
