GPS Upper School students, along with one intrepid Middle Schooler, took home numerous prizes and awards from the Regional Science and Engineering Fair.

Just prior to students leaving for Spring Break, some GPS science students discovered that they won category and special awards at the 65th annual Regional Science and Engineering Fair.

Chandler Mull, a sophomore, was a multiple-award winner. In addition to taking first place in the Biochemistry Senior Division category, she was an ISWEEEP winner, receiving an all-expenses paid trip to Houston, Texas, at the end of April. The 2017 International Sustainable World Energy Engineering Environment Project Olympiad will provide her an opportunity to showcase her own research.

“In my project, I tested the locomotor activity of a pond snail when exposed to different amounts of caffeine,” said Mull. “From my background research, I found that when an invertebrate was given a larger amount of caffeine, it led to negative effects, while a smaller amount led to positive effects for behaviors like memory and learning. Because information about the effects of caffeine on invertebrates is still very new to the science world, this data could open doors for future research about this topic.”

Other Senior Division category winners were Ameera Bhatti, 1st in Animal Sciences; Abby Worlen, 2nd place in Behavioral Sciences; Olivia Evans, 2nd place in Biomedical & Health; Ruchi Patel, 1st place in Cellular and Molecular Biology; Brianna House and Amal Ali, 1st and 2nd place in Chemistry; Larkin Brown, 1st place in Environmental Engineering; and Corley Compton, 1st place in Microbiology.

Middle School student Anya Parambath entered the science fair with the encouragement of her teacher, Kipton Tugman, and won the Environmental Engineering category in the Junior Division and the Broadcom Masters Award.

Other Upper School students taught by Sonya Steele received some of the Special Awards presented at the fair: Lane Lawrence, American Meteorological Society; Oliva Combs, Ricoh Sustainable Development; and Larkin Brown, Stockholm Junior Water Prize Award. She may enter her project at the state and national level competition.
