Howell, Hazel Hughes (Summerville)

Hazel Hughes Howell, of Summerville, Georgia, passed away on Monday, March 27, 2017 at her Royal Oaks residence.

She was born in Summerville (Chattooga County) in 1928 and was preceded in death by her parents, C.D. and Mary Bridges Hughes; three brothers; and a sister.

Mrs. Howell served as an Administrative Assistant to the Secretary of State of Georgia in the late 1950s and then traveled widely for a number of years with her husband, Frank, with his career at Lockheed.

She is survived by her husband of almost 70 years, Frank Howell of Dalton; two brothers, Morris (June) Hughes of Fayetteville, GA and Dewey (Martha) Hughes of Dalton; nieces and nephews, Jean (Henry) Davis of Leary, GA, Shirley (Allin) Butcher of Lake City, FL, Leah Hughes of Atlanta, Morris (Sheila) Hughes of Molena, GA, Donna (Troy) Saunders of Jenkinsburg, GA, Lynn (Johnny) Huddleston of Fayetteville, GA and Dale Strickland of Fayetteville, GA; and several great-nieces and nephews.

While working and traveling with Lockheed, the Howells made many special friends in Canada, Europe, Turkey and Libya. After retiring, they lived at Lake Arrowhead near Canton, GA where they added many close friends. The family is grateful to the staff at Royal Oaks, the wonderful sitters (Freda Boring, Tammi Willis, and Rhonda Smith) and to the Hamilton Hospice staff for their love and excellent care.

A memorial service will be held at Royal Oaks in Asbury Hall on April 8 at 1 p.m. with Dr. Jim Kilgore officiating. A graveside service will be held on Little Sand Mountain, Chattooga County, GA at a later date.

The family asks that flowers be omitted and memorials be made to Family Promise of Whitfield County, P.O. Box 2162 Dalton, GA 30722 or to Little Sand Mountain Cemetery Fund, 2728 S. Little Sand Mountain, Armuchee, GA 30105.
