Squonk Opera Featured At “Earth, Wind And Solar” Celebration Tuesday

  • Monday, April 10, 2017
The public is invited to celebrate Earth Week with UTC and the City of Chattanooga at Historic Engel Stadium on Tuesday for Earth, Wind and Solar, an Earth Week celebration featuring three 30-minute concerts and multiple workshops about energy, wind power, and wind machines from the renowned Squonk Opera. This educational and family friendly festival is a signature event for this year's Earth Week celebrations in Chattanooga, and is presented by UTC’s Patten Performances, Office of Sustainability, and the City of Chattanooga, along with sponsors Tennessee Valley Federal Credit Union, EPB and Tennessee Solar Solutions.

Musical guests Squonk Opera will be performing Pneumatica, a larger-than-life outdoor musical event about air, made of air, and powered by air.
The Squonkers pump up the volume with live original music that permeates the air, while inflatables pump up and immerse the audience. Squonk will perform three times - at 4 p.m., 6:30 p.m., and 8 p.m., and their workshops will follow the 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. shows. The Pittsburgh-based Squonkers have played on three continents and in over 25 states while creating 11 original productions that have been performed in more than 250 venues across the United States. They appeared in season six of the NBC reality show America’s Got Talent, making it to the top 48 and performing live for 14 million viewers. The Buffalo News hailed them as “Rust Belt dada” and the Washington Post describes them as “Debussy meets Godzilla, often overblown, site-specific, and always participatory, Squonk’s work was born from Middle America."

In addition to Squonk's, EPB's, and Tennessee Solar Solutions' workshops, Hamilton County Schools will feature working displays from their robotics and STEM classes, local farms and craft folk will have displays and items for sale, local sustainable businesses will be on hand to demonstrate products and educate everyone on making sustainable living practices a viable choice for daily life. Food trucks will be providing food options at the festival, while the TreeDimensional light show, silent auction, and other activities will keep audience members engaged, not just with the music and the festival, but the historic ball park itself.

Adult/Senior Tickets $10 (general admission); available at the UTC Fine Arts Center Box Office or at the gate.  Students are Free.
