Facing a determined Alabama-Huntsville squad vying for the top-seed in the Gulf South Conference Tournament the Lee women's lacrosse team fell to the Chargers, 28-5 on Monday afternoon at the South Quad Field.
The Chargers (12-4, 6-1) stormed out to a 17-3 lead at the halftime break and never looked back paced by seven goals and five assists from Nicole Federovitch. She now leads the GSC in total goals with 52 on the year.
Lee was led by a hat trick from Brianne Schapira and single goals from Hanah Rotello and Madeline Perrigo.
The Lady Flames scored their first goal at the 24:47 mark on a perfectly timed assist from Rotello to Perrigo who fired it home.
Schapira, a junior from Winston-Salem, N.C., now leads the team with 19 goals on the season. Rotello, a junior from Lebanon, Ohio, follows her with 17 goals and a club leading four assists.
The Chargers outshot Lee, 41-12 and held a 17-10 edge in ground balls. The two teams were nearly even in draw controls with UAH holding a 19-15 edge.
Jayne Renfro recorded 10 saves in goal for the Lady Flames. Renfro was thrust into the goalkeeper spot after injuries to Abby Sanders and back-up keeper Katelyn Burkett. Haleigh Comp allowed just five goals and tallied four saves while playing all 60 minutes in net for Alabama Huntsville.
The Chargers now hold a half-game lead on Young Harris (5-1) for first place in the GSC. The Mountain Lions travel to Lee on Wednesday and Shorter on Saturday while UAH finish the regular season at home against Montevallo on Saturday.
The Lady Flames will look for their elusive first victory as they wrap up the home portion of the inaugural regular season on Wednesday with a visit from Young Harris College. Opening draw is set for 4 p.m. Lee will finish out the year on Friday with a visit to
