Rock Creek at Gear Swap

The Gear Closet is a source to get gently used outdoor clothing and gear at reduced prices.

Founded by MaryBeth Sutton and supporters of CaribbeanSEA & TenneSEA (Student Environmental Alliance) Kids 4 Clean Water Project, The Gear Closet is a re-sale and consignment store specializing in used outdoor gear. They take donations and consignment items and 100 percent of proceeds go towards local clean water projects, including water monitoring, restoration, and education.

“TenneSEA empowers kids to lead our communities' efforts to protect our water," said Ms. Sutton.  "When children have personal experience and meaningful encounters with nature, they grow to love nature and want to help protect the environment.  Children who love nature are the environmental stewards of the future. These kids will be the leaders in watershed protection and restoration."

“Our goal is to give a voice to Kids 4 Clean Water and support Chattanooga’s active lifestyle,” said Jenn Grymes, store manager.  “Our ever changing inventory includes clothing, camping gear, water sports, bikes, climbing gear, traditional sports equipment and more. Our shop is not just for the outdoor adventurer. We want everyone to get outside and experience the natural beauty of Chattanooga and beyond.”

The Gear Closet opened their doors on Main Street in the spring of 2012. In September, 2012, they moved to their North Shore location on Cherokee Boulevard. Next month they will be moving again, to 1510 Riverside Dr. This new location is across from The Boathouse and next to Green’s Eco Build and Design.

“Our customer base has grown by leaps and bounds this year, with record sales thanks to our wonderful consignors and those who bring in donations," said Ms. Sutton.  "We are very excited to continue this growth in our Riverside Drive location."

The Gear Closet is hosting Chattanooga’s 10th Annual Earth Day Gear Swap and Outdoor Expo on Saturday, April 22, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. For more info, call 413-3298, email jenn@caribbean-sea.org or visit www.gearcloset.org
