  • Saturday, April 15, 2017

The Cleveland Fire Department held its second U.S. Flag Retirement Ceremony on Saturday at the VFW Post 2598 on North Ocoee Street.

The Cleveland Fire Department collects weathered, worn and tattered American flags at collection boxes at CFD Station 4 at 2850 Keith Street and CFD Station 5 at 2525 Old Freewill Road.

The Fire Department has collected over 400 flags since the start of the program over a year ago.

The CFD Honor Guard and the VFW conducts the ceremony annually. The battered flags are retired according to the U.S. Flag Code. The ashes are buried on the Retirement grounds as called for by the Flag Code.

Saturday's event began with the National Anthem played by the CFD's Sammy Previlus. The Honor Guard presented the first flag to be retired. The public was invited to join the ceremony. Children, adults, veterans, police officers and firefighters carried flags to present at the fire pit for ceremony.
