Over 200 family, friends and supporters gathered at the Bessie Smith Hall on Saturday to celebrate the 80th birthday of longtime educator Jewell Baldwin Morris Cousin.  Mrs. Cousin, a native Chattanoogan, began her career in education in 1958 as a classroom teacher; serving later as a curriculum coordinator, director of Head Start Programs, school principal and director of Personnel for the Chattanooga Public Schools.

During her life-time, Mrs. Cousin has touched the lives of many having previously served on various civic boards and committees including the American Red Cross, the Exchange Club of Chattanooga, former president of the Retired Teachers Association for Chattanooga and East Tennessee Retired Teachers Association, to name a few. Even today, she continues her schedule of involvement as an active member of Christ Church Episcopal, a life member of the NAACP and a life member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.  She has influenced many young ladies to become a part of the organization with seven of her female relatives also becoming Deltas.

Mrs. Cousin graciously reared her younger siblings after the deaths of their parents and her spirit of generosity continues.  Among the well-wishers were her two daughters, Constance Elaine Morris and Marolyn Anita Cousin, along with five of her brothers and sisters:  Mr. James (Lorene) Baldwin; Mrs. Irene Baldwin Chapman; Ms. Marion Baldwin; Mr. Gilbert Baldwin, Sr; and Dr. Carolyn (Jesse) Baldwin Tucker.  A host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends joined in the festive occasion.
