Fans who enjoy tight games with excellent pitching were treated to two seven inning games of just that. Fans who like to see lots of hits, home runs, and many runs scored were disappointed Tuesday at AT&T Field. The Tennessee Smokies took both games of the twin bill winning 2-0 and 1-0.

Game One:

Nick Gordon led off the bottom of the first inning with a single and was followed byan Engelb Vielma walk to put him in scoring position, but that was one of the few opportunities Chattanooga would get all game.

Fernando Romero matched Hedges until the seventh inning. Through six innings he had allowed just three hits and walked two with four strikeouts. He started the final inning with two more K’s, but a Vielma error at shortstop got the losing wheels spinning.

The next batter singled and Romero was removed after 81 pitches and was now responsible for the game without being the one throwing the pitches. I’m guessing he would have rather done the rest himself whichever way it went from there.

John Curtiss came on, walked the bases loaded, and gave up a single to score both of Tennessee’s runs on the scoreboard before getting a K to end the inning. The Lookouts proceeded to go down one-two-three as Hedges slammed the door on them like he had all game.

In his last two starts, Romero has tossed 12 1/3 innings and allowed just one earned run on ten hits and three walks, while striking out ten. He’s improved his ERA from 9.00 to 3.44.

Andrew Ely's single scored Jason Vosler and Ian Rice and provided all the offense for Tennessee.

Hedges (2-2) picked up the win after allowing just one hit over seven scoreless innings.

Romero (1-3) took the tough loss in the Southern League game after giving up two runs and four hits over 6 2/3 innings.

The Lookouts were held off the scoreboard for the fourth time this season, while the Smokies' staff recorded their fourth shutout of the year.

Game Two:

Nik Turley had a record night for the Lookouts in game two of their double header as he struck out 14 batters including a record tying eight in a row. The righty, signed out of the independent leagues, is now the second Lookouts player to accomplish that feat. In 1988 Jim Jefferson struck out eight in a row against Charlotte. Turley now has 36 strikeouts on the year which is second in all of Minor League Baseball.

Charcer Burks scored the decisive run on a ground out in the first inning, as the Tennessee Smokies defeated the Chattanooga Lookouts 1-0 in the second game of a doubleheader on Tuesday.

Burks scored after he reached base on a walk, stole second and then went to third on a sacrifice bunt.

Daury Torrez struck Nick Gordon out with a runner on first to end the game for his first save of the season.

David Berg (1-0) got the win with two innings of scoreless, two-hit relief while Chattanooga starter Turley (0-1) took the loss, his ERA is now .044.

The Lookouts were held scoreless for the fifth time this season, while the Smokies' staff recorded their fifth shutout of the year.
