Hamilton County Republican Women attended the annual Ladies Day on the Hill sponsored by TFRW in the House Legislative Chamber, State Capitol Building, Nashville. Upon arrival, breakfast was provided by State Senator Mark Green, recently nominated by President Donald Trump for Secretary of the Army, and a speaker for the event.
Governor Bill Haslam welcomed and informed Republican ladies from across the state that Tennessee continues to outpace other states in manufacturing, managing a fiscally responsible budget, and ranks second in the nation on roads. He explained the state's dire need for rebuilding its infrastructure, especially its aging bridges.
Senator Mae Beavers, Rep. Mark Pody, Rep. Jerry Sexton, TN Eagle Forum President Bobbie Patray, and Senator Jim Tracy, spoke individually on current legislation including the gas tax (Improve Act), the bathroom bill, and a bill to allow students graduating from high schools with illegal parents to attend state community colleges and universities without paying out of state tuition and turns the "in state tuition" decision authority over to the Board of Regents. Ms. Patray discussed the Tennessee federal lawsuit filed in the West Tennessee District Courts. They sponke on how the federal government continues to force the state to pay costs related to the resettlement of refugees. In 2008, the House passed legislation to opt out of resettlement program. The government then turned resettlement of refugees over to The Catholic Charities. Data collected in one study indicated the cost of illegals in the state had risen from $285 million in 2011 to $547 million in 2013 and continues to rise.
Speaker of the House Beth Harwell, Senate Majority Leader Mark Norris, and Tennessee GOP Chairman Scott Golden opened the luncheon at the Doubletree. Rep. Patsy Hazelwood had lunch with HCRW. Guest speakers and entertainment followed with Chris Cox, Bikers for Trump, Mason Weaver- author, speaker and former Black Panther, now a Republican and Trump supporter, and Robert Swope, Tennessee state director Trump campaign. Music was provided by inger Kenny Lee of the "The Trump Card Song." The grand finale was the "Adorable Deplorable Contest."
