The Covenant women's tennis team picked up a key USA South West Division victory on Friday afternoon by defeating Huntingdon 7-2 at the Gibbs Tennis Center.
The win is the 16th straight regular season USA South win for Covenant (11-7, 6-0 USA South) and also gives the Lady Scots at least a share of the division regular season title. Covenant can win the division title outright with a win over LaGrange on Saturday.
Huntingdon was previously unbeaten in league play.
The Hawks drop to 12-5 overall and 4-1 in the USA South.
Covenant took two of the three doubles matches. Aly Hall and Esther Eddy combined for an 8-2 win at the No. 1 position, while Gracie Smith and Claire Luger were 8-4 winners at No. 2.
In singles, Hall asserted herself with a dominating 6-0, 6-1 win at the No. 1 spot over Dusty Catala. Annie DeLuca took down Josie Waddell 6-4, 6-2 at the second position, while Luger was victorious 6-3, 6-3 over Mariah Bastos at No. 3.
Eddy outlasted Heather Tabor in the first set of their match with a tiebreak victory 7-6 (9) and then took the second set 6-3. Smith grabbed her 51st career singles win with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Caroline McBroom at the fifth spot.
