Montgomery, Catherine "Cathy" Arlene (Dayton)

  • Wednesday, May 24, 2017

Catherine “Cathy” Arlene Montgomery, 47, beloved daughter, sister, mother, and aunt, went to be with the Lord on May 22, 2017.

Cathy was a lifelong resident of Dayton, TN and was of the Methodist faith attending Graysville United Methodist Church. She graduated from Rhea County High School in 1988 where she played the saxophone in the marching band and her favorite classes were math and drafting. After graduating she attended Chattanooga State Technical Community College where she studied engineering before transferring to East Tennessee State University.

In January of 1995, Cathy’s life changed was forever changed with the birth of her cherished son Hunter Scott. Shortly after his birth Cathy discovered her calling to help others and began working with Dr. James P. Bolton, MD, Obstetrician-gynecologist at Women’s East Pavilion in Chattanooga, TN. She worked there for 20 years, helping to bring into this world many beautiful and healthy babies. Cathy was a compassionate, loving, and giving person to many first-time mothers, her sisters included, never minding a late-night call at a home when a new mom had a question or concern. As per Cathy’s wishes she has chosen to continue helping others by being an organ donor in the hope that she can help save lives.

Anyone who knew Cathy knew she had two true passions in life: Hunter and sports. She was an avid sports enthusiast and transferred this love of sports to her son. Her favorite teams were the Tennessee Volunteers, The Atlanta Braves, and the Tennessee Titans so it stands to reason that she was not an Alabama football fan. Cathy was a loving and devoted mother who never missed a baseball, football, or basketball game that Hunter played in over the course of 17 years. The piece of advice she always told Hunter was to just have fun and enjoy the game. In the early years of Hunter’s life, she became a member of the Dixie Youth Baseball Committee and the Dayton Little Eagles Football Committee where she worked to help make the programs enjoyable for all the kids. She was so proud when Hunter got to attend College on a baseball scholarship and then to see him graduate in May of this year filled her heart so much with love and joy. Hunter will always carry with him the memories of seeing his Mom in the stands cheering him on or hearing her voice call out, “That’s my Boy!”.

Cathy’s favorite place to vacation was the beach. Cathy and Hunter made numerous trips to Myrtle Beach and Gulf Shores. She loved to sit on the beach and watch Hunter play in the surf. Cathy found peace and beauty in the sights and sounds of the ocean.

Cathy is survived by her parents, Tommy L. and Carol A. (Dagnan) Montgomery, her beloved son, Hunter Scoons, her sisters, Tammie L. (Montgomery)Johnson, Meredith R. Montgomery, and Elizabeth A. Montgomery, her brother John D. Montgomery, her Nephews Christian T. Montgomery (Jordan Carter Montgomery), John “Gabe” Montgomery, and her nieces Olivia H. Johnson, and Caroline R. Montgomery as well as her aunts, uncles, cousins and friends, all of Dayton.

A celebration of Cathy’s life will be held on Friday, May 26, at 7 p.m. at Vanderwall Funeral Home in Dayton, TN. Cathy would like for everyone to wear bright colors in lieu of black to celebrate her and her life.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation in Cathy’s name to Saint Jude’s Children Hospital or National Stroke Association.

The family asks that you spend time with your family, perhaps take a trip to the beach and talk to them, tell them daily that you love them because that is what Cathy would want.

The family is being cared for by the Vanderwall Funeral Home where they will receive friends after 5 p.m. Friday, May 26.

Please share your memories of Cathy on her on-line guest register at www.vanderwallfh.com.
