MURFREESBORO -- The Whitwell Lady Tigers gave it their best shot in the Class A division of the TSSAA State Softball Tournament here at the Starplex fields, but they were eliminated late Wednesday afternoon after dropping a 10-9 slugest to Jackson Christian.
Jackson Christian scored two runs in both the first and third innings before adding five more in the fifth, but it was a single run in the top of the seventh that provided the winning margin.
Junior Sophie Dunavant was the leader for the winning Lady Eagles as she had a pair of two-homers in her three hits and finished the game with five runs batted in.
Sophomore Jenna Arnold was the winning pitcher after allowing nine runs, including seven earned, on 11 hits. She also had three strikeouts and one walk.
Freshman Maddie Jordan set the pace for Whitwell with three hits, which included a two-run double. Carley Young had two hits and both were two-run homers, the first in the first inning and the second in the seventh.
Whitwell's season ends at 21-11.
Defending Class A state champ Meigs County came out on the short end of a 2-1 game to Forrest and will be playing in the losers bracket Thursday where they will face Scotts Hill.
