State D-II AA singles champion Drew Hawikins of Baylor
MURFREESBORO - Baylor senior Drew Hawkins joined a select group of prep tennis players from the Chattanooga area Friday winning her third straight TSSAA D-II AA singles championship with a 6-2, 6-1, win against teammate and good friend Landie McBrayer here Friday at the Old Fort Park Tennis Complex.
Hawkins, who will play college tennis at Belmont next year lost only one set in nine state tournament matches on the way to her three titles.
Three Time Chattanooga Champs: Susan Hill of Red Bank (1973-74-75),Ellen Rogers of Chattanooga Christian School (1999, 2001, 2002), Stephanie Harris of GPS (2002, 04-05) and Claire Bartlett of GPS (2006-07-08) and Hawkins have won three state singles titles.
Anna Catharine Feaster of Knox Webb holds the state record wiith four titles (2011-12-13-14).
Boys D-II Doubles: McCallie seniors CharlieThiel and Ryan Crump won the D-II AA state doubles crown with a 7-6 (4), 6-4 victory over Baylor’s top seeded team of Alec Kadrie and Ben Taverne. The Blue Tornado duo, which also won a doubles title at the Carter Invitational during the season, had lost to Kadrie and Taverne in the region finals.
The last time McCallie won a state doubles crown was in 2008 as Wes Nelson and Chris Schlabach won in similar style with three wins including a 7-6 (5), 6-4 victory in the finals.
In the D-II girls doubles final, Catherine Owen and Grace Anne Dunavant of Hutchison defeated Baylor’s Lily Moonie and Lauren Carelli, 6-3, 6-4.
