3 GPS Students Recognized By Congressional Art Contest

  • Wednesday, May 3, 2017

Three GPS students were among six artists recognized by the 2017 Congressional Artistic Discovery competition for the 3rd Congressional District. Sophomore Reagan Long placed third in the contest with a close up oil painting of a French horn, a piece that captures the brightness of the instrument and that reflects the beauty of the horn.

The Art II class taught by Julie Deavers began the project by visiting the GPS orchestra room and photographing the various instruments. Reagan’s painting will hang in 3rd District Congressman Chuck Fleischman’s Chattanooga office for one year.

Senior Tia Kemp and junior Abbey Hegwood, also students of Ms. Deavers, received Honorable Mentions. Tia, a student in AP 2D Art, submitted “Discovery,” a digital photography/photoshop piece. Abbey's submission was a charcoal self-portrait. She is a student in Art III.

Sponsored by the Congressional Institute and begun in 1982, the nationwide high school visual art competition recognizes and encourages talent in each congressional district. There were 154 works of art entered in the contest this year, and only six awards were given, with GPS students receiving three.

Ms. Deavers said upon hearing of the results, “It’s so exciting and gratifying when the students’ hard work pays off and they are recognized in the broader community.”
