Lee Athletes Garner Top GSC Academic Honors

  • Tuesday, June 13, 2017

The Gulf South Conference released its 2017 FireSeeds All-Academic Teams for the spring sports season on Tuesday afternoon. Lee University placed six athletes on the academic squads.

The women's golf team placed two on the elite teams.

Juniors Sam Burrus and Caroline Moore added academic honors to go along with their skills on the golf links. Burrus is an accounting/finance major with a 3.94 GPA. Moore majors in advertising and carries a 3.55 GPA.

"We are very proud of each of these athletes. This recognition speaks volumes as to their commitment to being well-rounded student-athletes. They all take great pride in excelling on and off the course," said Lee golf coach John Maupin.

Sophomore Josiah Brooks (3.32 GPA, mathematics) joined Cayce Bryan (senior, 3.85 GPA, health science), Jessica (Childers) Gullette (senior, 4.0 GPA, Spanish education) and Audrey Smith (junior, 3.65 GPA, biochemistry) in representing the track and field teams.

"This is a great honor for our athletes. We push being committed in the classroom and on the playing field. Each one of these athletes is very balanced in every aspect of college," said head track and field coach Caleb Morgan.

"We had an exceptional spring athletically with five teams advancing to regional or national competition. Although we are proud of their accomplishments, we are equally proud of the student athletes who were named to the GSC Fireseeds All-Academic Team and Honor Roll. I appreciate the emphasis all of our coaches have placed on academics and the commitment shown by their athletes.

I applaud the Gulf South Conference for recognizing the academic achievements of the student athletes and look forward to their continued success in the classroom," praised Lee athletic director Larry Carpenter.

Academic All-GSC Teams are selected by the Gulf South Conference Sports Information Directors (SIDs) and Faculty Athletic Representatives (FARs) in a joint vote. Nominees must have an overall grade point average (GPA) of 3.20 or better on a 4.00 scale for their entire academic career and may not be freshmen or first-semester or quarter transfers.

The student-athlete must be a significant contributor to the squad. Other factors include leadership, community service and extra-curricular activities. SIDs and FARs are not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes. The number of student-athletes selected in each sport is determined by the number of positions normally involved in the playing of that sport.

In addition to the five three-time award winners, there are 18 student-athletes who are earning the honor for the second time. Of the 86 GSC All-Academic selections, 40 were named to all-conference teams in 2017.

HONOR ROLL

Qualification for the GSC Honor Roll is automatic based on at least a 3.00 grade-point average and does not require a voting process. Overall, there were 794 student-athletes who earned this distinction, the most in conference history for the spring season.

The Flames and Lady Flames had a total of 85 athletes represented on the GSC Honor Roll.
