John Alva “Alvie” Aultman died peacefully surrounded by his family and friends in Chattanooga, Tennessee on July 23rd 2017 at the age of 86.

John is survived by his children, William Preston Aultman of Maine, Theresa Aultman Biggs of Soddy Daisy, Christine Belle Pergola of Grayson, Ga., John Alva Aultman, Jr. of Tucker, Ga., and siblings, Marilyn Cork of Eutaw, Al., and Gerald Aultman of Springville, Al. He was the proud grandfather of 12 and great-grandfather of 15.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Aultman, parents, William Thomas and Mattie Belle Aultman of Alabama and siblings, James Nelson Aultman, William Stanley Aultman and Clara Thomas McPherson of Alabama.

John was born on Dec. 29, 1930, in Hale County, Akron, Al., to William Thomas and Mattie Belle Aultman. He attended Akron High School along with his five siblings. After high school, he enlisted in the National Guard in 1946.  He went on to reenlist and served in the Army, Heavy Mortar Co. 200th Infantry from January 1951 to 1956.  He served his country during the Korean War. He started his family in Mobile, Al., and had four children, Preston, Theresa, Christine and John, Jr. and worked for the county of Mobile. He relocated his family in 1966 to the Atlanta area and began working for Bowman Freight Lines where he worked on the docks for 30 years and retired in 1996.  He married Ruby Roberson in 1976 and moved to Morrow, Ga., where they resided until 2014.

John was a simple man of God who never met a stranger and loved his children unconditionally. He was a devoted husband for 38 years.  He loved making people laugh and smile even through his pain and suffering. He was an avid sports fan and probably the Atlanta Braves biggest fan! He was a jokester who loved Abba’s House and Cracker Barrel, but mostly the ladies.  He was an active member of Evangel Temple Church until 2014.  He was a member of Abba’s House church of Hixson, and volunteered with Exodus Ministries where he ministered to the poor.

Celebration of life will be held on Friday, July 28, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at Chattanooga Funeral Home North Chapel, with a service to follow at 1 p.m..
