The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s tennis team was named an Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-Academic Team the ITA announced Tuesday. McKenzie Barco and Sydney Patton were named Scholar-Athletes. This is the seventh year in a row the Mocs have earned the team academic honor from the ITA.
Barco and Patton were each named to the Chattanooga Dean’s List and Athletics Director’s Honor Roll. Patton, with a 4.0 GPA through both semesters, received the Southern Conference Commissioner’s Medal for Academics and earned a spot on the SoCon Academic Honor Roll and Spring All-Academic Team.
Barco was also a selection to the SoCon Academic Honor Roll and Spring All-Academic Team.
In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters (including freshman through senior year).
The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). All varsity letter winners were factored into the cumulative team GPA for the current academic year (including fall 2016 and spring 2017).
The Mocs finished tied for third with a 4-3 SoCon record and was 14-8 overall. Barco posted an overall record of 7-16 playing at Nos. 5 and 6. Patton, playing the majority of her matches at No. 4, was 19-13 overall. In doubles, Barco played No. 3 with a 7-10 record and Patton was 6-12 at No. 2 doubles.
