Lee baseball coach Mark Brew wraps up this year’s class with eight new players
Veteran Lee baseball skipper Mark Brew has announced the late-summer signings of eight new Flames to join the club for the 2018 season.

Brew has added six transfers and two freshman to the squad that finished last season at 27-23. Three pitchers will join staff in University of Tennessee transfer senior Eric Freeman, junior Hill College (Texas) transfer Patrick Morrow and St. John's River junior-transfer David Pattinson.

One outfielder, two infielders and two catchers round out the late signees.
Kurt Ornowski (junior, Chattahoocee Valley Community College) is an outfielder with knack for getting on base while Junior Fernando Ortiz is a slick-fielding middle infielder from Wabash Valley College (Ill.). Freshman first baseman Blake Howard will stay close to home as he makes the short trip up to Cleveland after a decorated high school career at Silverdale Baptist Academy in Chattanooga.

Replacing NCAA South All-Region catcher Nate Wierzgac is junior power-hitting backstop Chase Gadau from Kankakee Community College. Rounding out the class is freshman Jared Lutsic who will provide depth behind the plate after an award-filled senior year at Grosse Ile Township (Mich.).

"We are really excited about this 2017-18 recruiting class.  These are all great young men with a commitment to excellence on the field and in the classroom," said Brew. "They complement our returning roster and fill the needs that were created through graduation from last year's team.  We are looking forward to each one's development as we look to tackle a very tough non-conference and conference schedule in 2018."

Coach Brew said – "Chase led his team to the NJCAA National Championship hitting in the heart of the line-up.  He will be a huge impact to the middle of our line-up.  He has the ability to be a game changer every time he steps to the plate.  Defensively, he is a great receiver, solid thrower, and very good on-field leader.  He has a chance to be a huge impact offensively and defensively for the 2018 Flames."

Coach Brew said – "Kurt gives us a much needed left-handed bat for the line-up.  He has excellent plate discipline as evidenced by his high OBP and has some strength in his swing with occasional pop.  He possesses very good bat control and can be an early or late line-up type hitter.  He is a quality defender in the outfield and projects to be a corner outfielder. Coach Christian Frias (Wabash Valley Asst Coach) said – "Fernie is what you call a "baseball player."  His ability to play the game the right way and positive attitude all the time makes him play at a high level.  He's the type of player that can get it done so many different ways, from hitting, baserunning, playing defense, and to the short game.  Fernie also brings a contagious energy and smile that can give a team a boost.  As a coach those are the type of kids you want to have on your team and not worry about anything."

Coach Brew said – "Fernando is a big-time defensive player who can play multiple positions in the infield.  He had a great offensive year in 2017, but injuries limited his at-bats.  He will bring a high level of energy and defensive ability to our infield.  Additionally, he will provide another quality hitter to our line-up.  He will be an exciting player to watch in 2018."

The university itself presents so many special opportunities and I can't wait to be a part of a first class organization. I am ready to get to work, compete and win a championship."

Coach Brew said – "David has the potential to be a back-end bullpen arm.  He pitches in the 88-90 range and has ability to dial it up and go even higher.  He has a firm slider that grades as a quality pitch.  He has great competitiveness and will be called upon to secure some big outs for the Flames in 2018.

Coach Ange (Silverdale Baptist Academy and former Flames player) said – "Blake was a huge part of our successful 2017 season where SBA finished 21-6 including district 5A & Region 3A championships.  Blake is one of the hardest workers to come through the Silverdale Baptist Academy program.  His hard-work and abilities helped our program become one of the best in the Chattanooga area.  I look forward to seeing Blake take those same qualities to a great program like Lee University where he can continue to make an impact both academically, athletically and for Christ's Kingdom."

Coach Brew said – "Blake is a physical freshman whose bat projects very well.  As a switch hitter, he has great strength at contact and should develop into a high slugging percentage player in his Lee career.  He is a first baseman by trade, but will help behind the plate also in 2018."
