CHI Memorial Rees Skillern Cancer Institute will host a Survivorship Empowerment class on Tuesday, at 5 p.m. The free class is open to all cancer survivors, regardless of where they received treatment, and their care givers.
People often wonder what they can do to get and stay healthy once cancer treatment is complete. Lifestyle changes, like eating healthier and increasing physical activity, can lower your risk of cancer and death, according to a 2014 report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
During the Survivorship Empowerment class, participants will learn about the role of nutrition in reducing the chance of cancer recurrence. There will be a cooking demonstration and food sampling with dietitians from the CHI Memorial Reese Skillern Cancer Institute. Survivors and guests will also learn how exercise and physical activity can help manage the side effects from chemotherapy and improve quality of life for cancer survivors.

The support group for people diagnosed with Lynch Syndrome, and their families, will hold its meeting on Tuesday. The Lynch support group meets once every quarter from 4:30-6 p.m. in the Rees Skillern Cancer Institute’s Cancer Risk and Survivorship Center, Suite 307. Catherine Marcum, DPN, APN, AGACNP-BC, AGN-BC, advanced practice nurse with training in clinical cancer genetics through the City of Hope, facilitates the group.
Lynch Syndrome is an inherited disorder that increases the risk for colorectal, endometrial, and many other types of cancer. Those with Lynch Syndrome, and their family, can face a lifetime of screenings and decisions about preventative surgery. This support group gives those affected by Lynch Syndrome an opportunity to talk with others on a similar journey.

The Rees Skillern Cancer Institute is a full member of the Lynch Syndrome Screening Network. Members are connected with other institutions across the country committed to performing universal tumor screening (UTS) for everyone with newly diagnosed colorectal and endometrial cancers, and join in collaborative efforts to create and share educational resources, screening protocols and data.
