Vote To Change Walker County Government Will Be November 2018

  • Friday, August 18, 2017

The vote to change the form of government in Walker County, Ga., will be November 2018.

Sole Commissioner Shannon Whitfield earlier said he wanted to be the county's last sole commissioner.

Walker County is one of the few counties in the country still retaining that form.

Since his election, the Georgia Legislature approved a bill setting up the new form of government, and it was signed by Gov. Nathan Deal.

Commissioner Whitfield said, if approved by Walker County voters, there will be a five-member commission.

Four commissioners will be from four districts.

The fifth commissioner will run at large and serve as the county's chief executive officer.

The set-up is similar to that in Dade County.

It is different from Catoosa County, which hires a city manager.
