County Commissioner Greg Beck said he will introduce a resolution to the Hamilton County Commission to start the process of transferring the bust of a Confederate general away from the courthouse grounds.
He said, "In recent months, the presence of such statues on public property around the nation, has created controversy among various groups even violence and death, and has become an issue that Hamilton County should resolve among our family of citizens.
“The issue has always been a sore spot for African Americans, but the attitude of the leadership until recently has been one of 'let sleeping dogs lie.' The citizens of our county should want to put these dark reminders in a more appropriate place, rather than have our faces washed with the memories of the past when we come to pay our property tax, or get tags and titles, or go to court or get various licenses to operate in the county."
Commissioner Beck also said, “We must prove we have the moral capacity to make the socially right decisions that will transcend all debates. I trust our Commission of honorable men and women to make choices that will inspire greatness in our citizens and not division.”
The statue of General A.P.
Stewart is on the south lawn of the courthouse.
