Eyewitnesses To Murder Say Hicks Hit Sherie Hinds With His Fists, Table

  • Thursday, August 24, 2017
Two eyewitnesses to a July 9 murder on Caine Lane said they saw Michael Anthony Hicks hit 40-year-old Sherie Hinds with his fists and then with a table top.

A criminal homicide charge was bound to the Grand Jury against the 29-year-old Hicks by General Sessions Court Judge Gary Starnes on Thursday morning.

Hicks already had prior criminal charges and is under a no bond.

Jeremiah McClendon, who said he worked with the two women, was with them on the night of July 8 and early morning of the next day.

He said they drove around and stopped several places before going to Ms. Percy's residence at 3922 Caine Lane, Apt. B.

He said there were some "altercations" during the evening. He said all were drinking and he was using cocaine and marijuana. He said the two women were using cocaine, marijuana and ecstasy.

The witness said the two women got into a lengthy fight inside the residence, and he said the brawl spilled over from the kitchen to the living room. He said, "I just kept trying to break it up."

However, afterward he said the women were "hugging and kissing each other." He said Ms. Percy was trying to get Ms. Hinds to go into the shower with her and had her pants off. But he said Ms. Hinds was crying hysterically over some problems she was facing.

At that point, he said there was a knock on the door and he let Hicks, the ex-boyfriend of Ms. Percy, in. He said the scene apparently looked to Hicks like Ms. Percy "was raping Cherie and I was letting it happen."

Witness McClendon said Hicks began hitting him, then Ms. Hinds ran up toward Hicks while swinging her arms. He said Hicks then knocked her to the floor. He said he then got the table top, which had previously been broken and was wedged up against the front door, and hit Ms. Hinds with it.

He said he was standing in the kitchen when Hicks also took a flat screen TV and hurled it at Ms. Hinds. He said he could not see whether or not it struck her.

The witness said he and Hicks "locked eyes," then Hicks fled out the front door and he went out the back. He said his cell phone was dead, so he ran to the BP on Shallowford Road and used a phone there to call 911.

Ms. Percy told of Hicks come "charging in and swinging at Jeremiah." She said Ms. Hinds got up and began trying to fight Hicks. "They swung at each other with their fists," she said. Then she said Hicks "got the best of her."

She said both she and McClendon were yelling at Hicks to stop, but he kept hitting her and then struck her with the table.

Ms. Hinds was later found dead at the residence. Police said trauma to the head was the apparent cause of death. She was found lying on her back in the living room.
