Erlanger Opens New Cardiac And Lung Rehab Center At Erlanger North Hospital

  • Wednesday, September 20, 2017

n response to community demand, Erlanger has opened a new cardiac and pulmonary rehab center at its Erlanger North Hospital campus.   The public is invited to tour the new facility, called the Erlanger Heart and Lung Institute (EHLI), at an open house Wednesday starting at 11 a.m.

Erlanger’s new rehab center is bringing cardiac, pulmonary, and PAD rehab to the community though a comprehensive lifestyle program.

The EHLI Center for Wellness will include exercise, nutrition education, diabetes and stress management training that are vital to improving overall health. This will be an extension of the program already in place at the Chattanooga Lifestyle Center including Cardiac Phase 3 rehab, Pulmonary Phase 2 and 3 rehab, and PAD rehab.

“At Erlanger, we are committed to improving the health of our community, and establishing the EHLI Center for Wellness at North is yet another move in that direction,” said Dr. Alison Bailey, director of Preventative Cardiology and Cardiac Rehab at the Erlanger Heart and Lung Institute. “We chose this location because the community asked for it. It is centrally located for many of our patients and fills some recent voids in the wellness area. We are so happy to be here as part of the North community and continue to expand on the work started at the Chattanooga Lifestyle Center.”

Ryan Harris was an athletic 32 year-old man when he suddenly had extreme shortness of breath that led to his hospitalization in October 2016. Shortly after being admitted to the hospital, he was diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension which leads to heart failure. Mr. Harris has made great strides from needing six liters of oxygen to walk five feet to slowly getting back to his athletic lifestyle with the help of pulmonary rehab at Erlanger. Now as he prepares for the arrival of his first child, his goal is to ensure he is able to carry his child without difficulty and help his wife to care for their growing family.

After retired Army Lt. General Don Rodgers had bypass surgery at Erlanger Baroness Hospital in 2013, his team of cardiac specialists suggested cardiac rehab to help with recovery and prevention. Mr. Rodgers has been participating in the cardiac rehab program for several years now and continues to lead a healthier lifestyle as a result. He credits Erlanger Health System for saving his life on multiple occasions.

Programs like cardiac, pulmonary and PAD rehab are proven solutions to the chronic disease crisis. Cardiac rehab improves survival rate by 25 – 30% after all invasive options have been exhausted. Erlanger opened Chattanooga’s first Cardiac Rehab program in 1978 with Dr. Walter Puckett, and has continuously offered the program for almost 40 years. The program is available to all patients no matter where care was previously received. For more information about Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehab visit www.erlanger.org or call 423 778-5661.
