Plan For Moccasin Bend National Archaeological District Completed

  • Friday, September 22, 2017

A General Management Plan for the Moccasin Bend National Archaeological District received final authorization from the National Park Service. Chickamauga and Chattanooga NMP is looking forward to implementing the plan which includes establishment of a visitor center on Hamm Road, as well as archaeological site protection,  guided interpretation, and improved access to the Brown’s Ferry site to better interpret the American Indian history of Moccasin Bend.

A number of opportunities to hike, explore and recreate in Moccasin Bend would be developed following National Park Service acquisition of additional property. Public access to Civil War sites on Stringers Ridge would additionally be implemented with acquisition of new lands.  These additions to the site will connect visitors to this important cultural and natural resource located in the middle of urban Chattanooga.

The Moccasin Bend National Archaeological District of Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park is renowned for its history of American Indian use and occupation extending back approximately 12,000 years. The district also played a role during the Civil War, when the Union Army occupied Stringers Ridge in the fall and winter of 1863 and used the position to exchange artillery fire with Confederate positions on Lookout Mountain.

More information about the Moccasin Bend National Archaeological District General Management Plan can be found on the park's website at www.nps.gov/chch/getinvolved/planning.htm.
