First grade students from North Hamilton County Elementary School with their new American flags
Members Phyllis Carter and Nancy Larson of Judge David Campbell Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution presented first grade students from North Hamilton County Elementary School with the red, white and blue symbol of America. Their eyes lit up as they received an American flag and marched to the tune of “It’s a Grand Ole Flag.”
Students from Ms. Dent, Mrs. McDonald and Mrs. Richardson’s classrooms learned about flag etiquette and first responder heroes in their community. They also enjoyed a story on the Pledge of Allegiance followed by a patriotic song.
The highlight of the day was when one little boy, smiling ear-to-ear and proudly holding his flag of the USA, said, “You mean I get to keep it!”
Students learned of patriotism and were outstanding listeners.
The Judge David Campbell Chapter, DAR, is visiting several elementary schools in Hamilton and Marion counties presenting flag etiquette lessons. The presentation, which is approximately 45 minutes, introduces students to the proper care of the flag, how to respond when the flag passes by and proper disposal of the flag when tattered and torn.
