A single engine company was dispatched at 9:31 a.m. on Wednesday, to 4711 Brainerd Road to the Delta Express gas station on a reported brush fire. Quint 13 arrived on scene, established command, and found a large pile of dirt under an awning that was smoking and flaring up. Command made contact with PM Environmental personnel on scene that had been replacing underground fuel lines at the gas station. The pile of dirt was saturated with gasoline and had ignited from an unknown ignition source.
Command requested a full response and notified Special Operations, due to the fire being directly on top of underground lines and storage tanks of gasoline. Quint 13 deployed a hand line and a foam blanket was applied to the contaminated soil to prevent fuel vapors from igniting. The surrounding businesses were evacuated until there was no longer an immediate hazard. The operations caused westbound traffic on Brainerd Road to close one lane for approximately 90 minutes. The Storm Water Division of Public Works, the Office of Land Development, and the Fire Prevention Bureau were all notified and reported to the scene.
There were no injuries from the incident and Delta Express suffered no property damage from the fire. The store will remain closed, however, until approval to reopen is given from the Fire Marshal’s Office.
