The Chattanooga Salvation Army Celebrates Martin Luther King Jr. Day With Day Of Service, With Over 150 Students Set To Volunteer

  • Friday, January 12, 2018

To celebrate Martin Luther King Day, several volunteer projects will be going on at The Salvation Army.

Southern Adventist University will be hosting a “Street Store” at 10:30 a.m. at 800 McCallie Ave. At the store, clothing and shoes will be hung on the gates of the property along the roadways, and Southern students will act as personal shoppers to assist the homeless with free clothes, providing them with a dignified shopping experience as they try on and select their own garments. Soup, sandwiches, and entertainment will also be provided. Approximately 100 Southern students along with Salvation Army staff will be volunteering at the event to assist with clothes and hand out free lunches to the “shoppers.”

The Girls Preparatory School and The McCallie School will also be volunteering on MLK Day. GPS will be decorating cookies with the homeless attending the Street Store at 10:30 a.m. Meanwhile, McCallie students will be repainting red Salvation Army barrels and organizing the Angel Tree Toy Shop for the coming year at 5001 Covington Street.

“I love that these three schools are coming together on a holiday to serve our community,” said Alissa Best, volunteer director at The Salvation Army. “Giving back to the community goes beyond what students can learn in the classroom, and we are grateful for their partnership in ‘doing the most good!’”
