John Portman, Architect Of Chattanooga's Gold Building, Dies At 93

John Portman, the architect of Chattanooga's Gold Building, has died in his hometown of Atlanta at 93.

The Gold Building on Pine Street was designed as the headquarters for Blue CrossBlue Shield.

It remained empty for several years after Blue Cross moved to Cameron Hill. However, it was recently remodeled to serve as a Westin Hotel.

Mr. Portman's designs often featured soaring atriums, as does the Gold Building.
