Garland Bernard Hughes, 88, of Fort Oglethorpe, passed away on Thursday, October 18, 2018, at a local healthcare facility. He was born September 8, 1930, in Chattanooga to the late William and Verda Hughes. Mr. Hughes joined the U.S. Army when he was 17 years old and served for over 30 years. Over the course of his career in the military, he worked in Aberdeen, Md. and the U.S. Pentagon as a safety director. After retiring from the Army, he worked for the state of Tennessee for 10 years. In his free time, Garland loved to golf and spend time with friends and family.
Garland is preceded in death by his first wife, Sue Falls Hughes; second wife, Ramelle Hughes; and daughter, Marsha Blaylock.
Garland is survived by his wife, Peggy Hughes; daughter, Gail (Art “Buddy”) Peters, of Rome; stepdaughter, Sherri (Randy) Miller, of Valley, Al.; sister, Joyce Bacon, of Rossville and Carolyn McElhaney, of Chickamauga; grandchildren, Shane Blaylock, Allen Peters, Sarah Reynolds and Parker & Preston Steger; great-grandchildren, Zane, Abbey, Daniel and David; many beloved nieces and nephews; and Garland’s beloved pet, Lucy.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday in the funeral home chapel, with Dr. Keith McLeod and Rev. Charles McElhaney officiating.
