  • Thursday, November 15, 2018
Coach Marty Rowe used all 15 players as Lee steamed to an 87-48 victory over visiting Cumberland University in Walker Arena on Wednesday evening.

The Lady Flames warmed the fans on a cold and rainy evening by posting their second win of the season in convincing style. They jumped to a 48-19 lead by halftime and never looked back. Lee will return to action on Saturday afternoon and host Brescia University (Ky.) at 2 p.m.

Freshman Haley Schubert and junior Taylor Boggess set the scoring pace for the Lady Flames with 15 points apiece.
Kayla Tillie followed with 12 and Becca Cheeks pitched in with 11 points. Thirteen of Lee’s 15 players got into the scoring act. Abby Bertram totaled seven and Anna Woodford garnered six points.

Lee’s 39 rebounds were paced by one of the smallest players on the floor in Schubert, who finished the contest with six boards. Nicky Widenski and Cheeks garnered five apiece. Schubert also led the Lady Flames with seven assists while Bertram added three. Britany Miller and Katherine Griffith grabbed six boards apiece for the losers. The Lady Flames out-rebounded the Phoenix 38-28.

The Phoenix club was paced by 18 points by Carli Codner-Pinto. De’Naizha Elder followed with eight points and Briana Vandlen tallied six. The Lee defense held the visitors to just 30.2 percent shooting from the field. They also hit only three second chance points.

On the other hand, the Lady Flames finished the contest with 47.3 percent from the floor and knocked down 39 percent from beyond the arc. They also made 6-of-8 free throws. Lee had 20 second chance points and also converted 14 fast break points. They overwhelmed the visitors with 49 points off the bench.

“It was a good opportunity to get a look at all our girls under game conditions,” pointed out associate head coach Jan Spangler after the win. “We like to play fast and our girls enjoyed that opportunity tonight. Our goal is to improve with each game and we saw some of that this evening.”
