UTC Women Beat UT-Martin 6-1

Sunday, February 11, 2018
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s tennis team scored a 6-1 win over UT-Martin at the Manker-Patten Tennis Center today.  The Mocs improved to 4-1 overall while the Skyhawks fell to 0-5 on the year.
Chattanooga won the doubles point by taking the top two spots.  UTC kept the momentum going with wins in each of the six first sets in singles.

“We had a good day today,” stated head coach Chad Camper. “UT-Martin is a loud, aggressive team and I feel we played smart tennis.
Annie Tarwater played a great match to end the day. This team is improving, but we have to keep developing on the court.”

Junior Caroline Hall was first off at No. 3, followed by junior Tamri Chalaganidze at No. 4 and freshman Emma van Hee with the clinching win at No. 5.  Senior Samantha Caswell followed that with a straight-sets win at No. 1.

UTM’s only point came at No. 2, when junior Delaney Edwards was forced to retire due to a nagging injury.

The last match saw Tarwater score her first win in a dual at UTC.  The sophomore from Texarkana, Texas, sat out last season after transferring from Arkansas-Fort Smith.  Today she defeated Ohla Burak 6-2, 6-4.

Up next for the Mocs are a pair of road matches next weekend.  UTC is at Presbyterian on Saturday, Feb. 17, followed by a Sunday match at Clemson.  The next home match is March 3 against ETSU.

Randy Exum: The Battle Captain Leads The Choir

"We don't give a damn about the whole state of Alabama, whole state of Alabama, whole state of Alabama. We don't give a damn about the whole state of Alabama....we're from Tennessee."   Those were the words that rang from the jubilant Tennessee locker room late Saturday afternoon, just a few minutes after the Volunteers had knocked off 21st ranked Auburn 30-24 and the ... City Placing New Penalties On Use Of Cell Phones In School Zone And By Drivers Under 18

The city is setting new penalties for use of cell phones in school zones.  Drivers 18 and older may not use hand-held devices while in the zones, but they can be on their hands-free units. Another section of an ordinance change would not allow those 18 and under to be talking on a cell phone while driving. That includes even if the device is hands-free. The ordinance ... Rhea Puppy Mill Dogs Slowly Recovering From Years Of Abuse, Neglect

Five days after Watson and 108 other dogs were rescued from a dark, filthy puppy mill in Rhea County, the frightened 12-pound Yorkie mix doesn’t look like the same animal. Watson got lucky; he was one of the 28 puppy mill survivors that wound up at Chattanooga’s Humane Educational Society. There, volunteer groomers from Pet Smart shaved away the heavy, massive tangle of ... (click for more)

Roy Exum: The Coach Who Said ‘No’

I couldn’t tell you the first time I met John Gagliardi … 30 years ago? 40? … and I never saw him nearly enough. He was a Division III football coach at some monastery of a place in Minnesota and that’s a long way from the Southeastern Conference. Our orbits rarely overlapped but somewhere down the line we were at the same table for dinner. Once that happened, it seemed like the ... (click for more)
