The family of a woman who died while incarcerated at the workhouse at Silverdale last Feb. 22 has filed suit in Circuit Court.

India Palmer sued CoreCivic (formerly CCA) in the death of Dana Shunice Palmer.

The suit, filed by attorneys Herbert Thornbury and Lawson Konvalinka, says Ms. Palmer was being moved within the workhouse when she obtained some contraband that had been introduced into the facility.

It was she was suppose to have been handcuffed, but was not.

The suit says Ms. Palmer put the contraband into her mouth, then guards began to try to get it from her.

It says they used pepper spray on her, causing her to gag and to die from asphyxiation.

The suit says aid was not properly rendered to her when she was gagging.

Ms. Palmer, 45, had been arrested Feb. 14, 2017, for public intoxication.

The suit asks $5 million compensatory damages and $10 million punitive damages.
