Covenant students in the Dr. Alicia Jackson's class History and Culture of African Americans Since 1865 are working on research about those buried in unmarked graves at the District Hill Cemetery in Chickamauga.
The students will use census records, newspapers, local history books, and online resources.
Officials said, "The purpose of the project is to restore and preserve the historic District Hill Cemetery (circa mid to late 1800s) in Walker County.
"Dr. Alicia Jackson of Covenant College will began a class project of researching dates and history of persons named in District Hill Cemetery. This is significant in giving the named an identity in a
historical context as a valued person in Walker County."
