UTC Track Third At Gamecock Quad Invitational

Saturday, March 10, 2018
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s track and field team opened the Outdoor season Saturday with a third place finish at the Gamecock Quad Invitational hosted by Jacksonville State at the Choccolocco Park in Oxford, Ala.

Seven personal records (PR) were set at the meet including Emily Poole who took first in the 5000 meter run with a time of 17:28.80. Rebekah Wich finished second in the event and topped her previous best time at 18:29.96.

“This was to be a developmental meet as we trained through it,” Chattanooga head coach Andy Meyer said.
“To have everyone place, PR or be just off a PR this early is great.”

In the 1500 meter, all five runners scored for the Mocs with the top three setting PRs. Brianna Nelson placed second in the middle distance race with a time of 4:47.49. Haley Morris was third with a time of 4:48.33 and Hannah Caldwell’s time of 4:53.02, finishing fourth overall.

Abby Bateman took second in the 800 meter run with a PR time of 2:18.26. Nicole Buehrle, also hitting a personal best, finished third with a time of 2:19.44.

“Abby ran the best tactical race of her career,” Meyer said. “Nicole coming off a foot injury was a surprise at third.”

In the field events, Rebekah Hampton took third in the Long Jump (4.87m) and the Triple Jump (10.60m). Hampton was fifth in the 100 meter Hurdles with a time of 16.32.

Rebekah Bryant scored for UTC with a sixth place finish in the Long Jump with a distance of 4.84m. Taylor Grayson was third in the Shot Put, throwing it 10.80m and was threw a 39.72 meters in the Hammer Throw for seventh overall.

“Taylor improved with each hammer throw,” Meyer said. “Rebekah Hampton did great in her first outdoor meet with two third place finishes in the jumps and a fifth in the hurdles.“

Freshman Katie Coker was fifth in the 400 meter Dash with a time of 1:01.07 and the Mocs relay teams placed fourth and fifth to wrap up the event.

“Our A 4x400 did well as everyone had run prior races,” Meyer said. “Coach Michael Gadson continues to develop the field girls and Coach Amanda Cotter has our mid distance runners competing at a high level already. We are only going to get stronger as the season progresses.”

Host Jacksonville State took first in the Red Division with 241 points. Georgia State was second followed by the Mocs in third with 100 points.

Chattanooga will return to the track on March 24 at the Emory Classic in Atlanta, Ga.

Randy Smith: Calling Out The Media

Since I have been a member of the Sports Media for close to a half-century, I feel obligated to call them out when I see or hear something wrong. That was the case yesterday as Tennessee's Jeremy Pruitt took the podium at the SEC Media Days in Atlanta. It seems that former Georgia players Aaron Murray and David Pollack accused Pruitt of being disrespectful to former Georgia coach ... (click for more)

Lookouts Open Series In Mobile Wednesday With 4-2 Win Over BayBears

MOBILE, Ala. --- When the Chattanooga Lookouts pitching staff digs in it's heels it means that a couple of home runs added in last night was good enough for a 4-2 win over Mobile. Despite working as a starter for the majority of the season, Anthony Marzi came on in relief for this one. Paco Rodriguez got the ball to kick off the contest, and he turned in a scoreless first ... Rhonda Thurman "Astounded" At Low Performance By Hamilton County Schools On TNReady; Dr. Johnson Says Some Gaps "Closing" Between County And State

County School Board member Rhonda Thurman said Thursday she was "astounded" by low performance on TNReady scores that were just released.   Noting that the county schools are below state levels in many areas, she said, "I am blown away. Employee Who Stole From East Ridge Should Be Prosecuted

Why has the East Ridge employee who was fired for theft not been charged with theft?    City Manager Scott Miller made the statement that the employee had problems and that the stolen items were returned.  What does that have to do with the employee stealing ?   He has had a history of abuse of city resources. Am I Alone? - And Response (5)

Am I alone seems to be quite apt as I begin to form sentences, thoughts and concerns regarding the state of this country. I feel like I am alone trying, somehow, to justify Trump and understand why he is constantly in the middle of chaos.  Now coined as the Liar-in-Chief, Chief Foreign Affairs Coordinator acting for his pal Russian Dictator, Putin.  The silence ...
