CARTA Takes Precautions At Emma Wheeler Homes After Incident In Which Object Was Thrown Into Bus

  • Friday, March 16, 2018

CARTA has begun rerouting buses at Emma Wheeler Homes late in the day after an incident in which children threw rocks that broke windows on the bus.

Lisa Maragnano, executive director, denied that it was counted as one of three bus accidents during the month, but said, "The Emma Wheeler Homes incident was a very serious operational matter which CARTA management addressed immediately.

"The Board of Directors is not charged with day-to-day operational duties for this type of situation, but the entire board was immediately informed of the situation by email, and was advised of what steps CARTA was taking to resolve it.

"CARTA management addressed the safety concern immediately by rerouting the buses after 7 p.m. so that they did not go through Emma Wheeler Homes; this change became effective Feb. 26.

"Residents still have access to this route on Wilson Road.

"For the two weeks between the last incident and the route change on Feb. 26, CARTA hired off-duty CPD officers to be in Emma Wheelers homes from 7 p.m. until midnight to ensure the safety of the customers and the operators.

"CARTA also met with the residents of Emma Wheeler Homes on Feb. 23 to review the new routing and to answer any questions."
