Covenant Tennis Teams Post Wins

The Covenant men's tennis team remained unbeaten in USA South play as the Scots dominated Maryville and took a 9-0 win on Friday afternoon at the MC Tennis Courts.

Covenant (9-2, 4-0 USA South) has won eight of its last nine matches and remains perfect in conference play at 4-0 on the year. 

On Friday, the Scots controlled play from the start and took additional points as Maryville (1-7, 0-3 USA South) did not have enough to fill out the lineup resulting in two default points for Covenant.

In doubles play, Matthew Harvie and Chris Cox took an 8-2 win over Daniel Silva and Marcos Escudero at the top spot. At No. 2 doubles, Trey Wood and Paxton Haggerty bested Trevor Perry and Cole Stinson by an 8-3 final. Covenant took its first default point at No. 3 doubles.

Covenant then completed the sweep in singles play. None of the matches went three sets as Covenant maintained leads throughout.

Harvie was a 6-0, 6-4 winner over Silva at the top singles position, while Cox won 6-3, 6-2 over Escudero at No. 2. Logan Hull defeated Mateus Coling at the third flight 6-1, 6-0. Taylor Galloway and Ben Tonkel completed the sweep at flights four and five, respectively. Galloway won 6-4, 6-2 over Perry at the fourth spot and Tonkel took a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Stinson at the fifth spot. 

With Maryville having five players available, Covenant took a default point at No. 6 singles.

Saturday's match at Berea was postponed due to weather. Covenant is back in action on Tuesday at home against Piedmont. Match time is set for 3:30 p.m.

The Covenant women's tennis team opened USA South play on Friday with an 8-1 victory over Maryville at the MC Tennis Courts.

The win was the 18th straight conference regular season victory for Covenant (5-5, 1-0 USA South). The Lady Scots have not lost a regular season USA South match since Feb. 27, 2016.

Covenant swept doubles play to take a 3-0 lead in the match. Annie DeLuca and Esther Eddy took down Kayla Zimmerman and Anastasia Dunn 8-3 at the top doubles spot, while Aly Hall and Jennie Spielman were 8-4 winners at the second position over McKennah Francis and Carter Dickinson. Mariah Westra and Morgan McCain completed the doubles sweep with their 8-5 win over Anna-Katherine Harris and Joyce Coling at No. 3.

In singles play, Covenant took a pair of three-set victories. DeLuca defeated Zimmerman 6-0, 6-7, 1-0 (10-7) at the No. 2 spot, while Mackenzie Jones won 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8) at the No. 6 position over Coling. 

Hall coasted in her victory at the top single spot with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Francis. Eddy also had little difficulty in her win as she took down Dickinson 6-0, 6-2. McCain had the other point for Covenant in singles play with her 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 5 over Harris.

Saturday's match at Berea was postponed due to weather. Covenant will be back on the courts on Tuesday at home against Piedmont. Match time is set for 3:30 p.m.
