Lee Lacrosse Wins 17-12 Over Montevallo

  • Wednesday, March 21, 2018
The Lee lacrosse team exacted some revenge after an earlier season loss to Montevallo in winning their first home conference game 17-12 over the Falcons on a windy and cold Wednesday afternoon at the South Quad Field.

"We have been working hard all week preparing for this rematch with Montevallo. The girls put a lot of time and energy into correcting the little mistakes that added up the last time we met," said head coach Addie Wadley of the rematch.

Lee (7-4, 2-3 GSC) was paced by leading goal scorer Becca Broadwick with four goals.
Broadwick, a freshman from Granger, Ind., leads the team with 40 goals on the year. Brianne Schapira, Emma Hill, and Madeline Perrigo each recorded a hat trick. Rachel Duda, Kaylyn Dillon, Abbie Mercuri, and Hannah Rotello each got on the scoresheet with one.

Montevallo (5-6, 2-3 GSC) scored in the first twenty seconds on a goal from Jami Hudak to take a 1-0 lead but it was all Lee from there.

The Lady Flames responded with a four-goal run with scores from Dillon, Broadwick, Schapira, and Mercuri.

The two teams would trade goals back and forth with the Falcons scoring on a Hudak goal to cut the lead to 5-3 with 20:58 left in the first half.

The teams would go scoreless over the next 14:02 before Lee scored on a Broadwick goal to jump start a five-goal run to end the first half and send head coach Addie Wadley's squad into the half with a 10-3 lead.

"They came out strong and played a phenomenal first half. The girls were working together really well on attack and were able to possess the ball well and control the pace of the game," said Wadley.

The second half saw Lee jump out to a 16-6 advantage on a Rotello goal with 16:07 left in the game to start the running clock.

Montevallo answered with a five-goal run of their own to cut the lead to 16-11. Nabyl Jimenez scored the first goal in the run to be the first Lady Falcon to score other than Hudak to jump start frenzy with 12:46 left on the board. Alyssa Kaminski scored with 11:39, Jimenez would score again with 9:34, Nicole Pahnke scored with 7:36, and Janey Johnson scored with 4:43 left to end the run.

Hill short circuited the rally as she scored her 27th goal of the year to push the lead to 17-11 with 2:53 left in the match.

Hudak led all goal scorers with six. Johnson and Jimenez were able to throw in two each. Pahnke, and Kaminski scored one apiece.

"Montevallo fought hard in the second half and made us work until the final whistle for this win," added Wadley.

Abby Sanders got the start in goal and played 57 minutes, allowing 11 goals, while saving seven and picking up the win. Christa Hill came in and finished out the last three minutes allowing one goal and stopping two.

"I am very proud of how hard the girls worked during the game and also leading up to it. It is awesome to see that determination pay off," concluded Wadley.

The Lady Flames will be back in action this Saturday as they take a short one game road trip to the mountains of West Virginia to take on the University of Charleston at 12 p.m. Lee returns home on Mar. 28 as they face off with GSC foe Young Harris College with first draw coming at 4 p.m.
