EPB Closing In On 100,000th Fiberoptic Customer; Moving Closer To Use Of Drones

  • Friday, March 23, 2018

EPB is closing in on its 100,000th fiberoptic customer.

Officials said the utility has reached 96,200 as new customers keep signing up.

The business plan was built on 40,000 customers, President David Wade noted.

EPB was making money after reaching 33,000, and it remains a major contributor to the electric side's financial health.

Also, EPB is moving along toward use of drones in checking power lines.

Mr. Wade said they can be effective in finding problems along remote and mountainous lines - saving personnel from having to walk a line for miles.

Also, he said, they can look closely at the top of a pole to help detect a problem.

Utilities still must get clearance from the FAA before proceeding with their use.
