City Council Discussing Trimming City Court From 2 Judges To 1; Possible Staff Reductions

  • Tuesday, March 27, 2018

City Council members said Tuesday they are looking at trimming City Court from two judges to one.

However, council members noted that cannot be done until the eight-year terms of Judges Russell Bean and Sherry Paty expire in 2022.

City Court has lost a number of its cases in recent years, and the city is also now using an Administrative Hearing Officer to take even more of the cases.

City Court still hears some traffic, parking, environmental and animal cases.

The council discussed a possible charter change to make the reduction.

Council members said they would look at the staffing issue at the upcoming budget sessions.

The council asked staff for figures on how much the court is bringing in as well as the amount of spending.
